The magnitude of God's love is an incomprehensible character trait of God which has the power to overwhelm. It is this love that makes even a speck of dust acceptable and worthy in His eyes.

Pastor’s Pen: Is anything too hard for the Lord?

Living in our rational world with little expectation for God’s manifest power we can often find the miracles of God in the bible far fetched, far from reality or even simply far-out. Sadly it is this lack of faith and expectation; this lack of understanding or knowledge of our God that puts us in danger of reading biblical accounts as merely stories from another period of time, which may or may not have happened.

But far from mere stories that border on myth (which is how some Christians treat the miraculous accounts in scripture) God intends the occasions of His power manifest in the biblical accounts to reflect what we experience of Him today. In the passage we are looking at in the message today, the first disciples also were living in a faithless generation. The people saw a miracle occur and they were “astonished” at what they saw.

But rather than sneer at their lack of faith, perhaps we can learn a little about our own lack in the area of experiencing God’s wonderful and miraculous interventions and provisions. A disrespectful and unbelieving attitude is not becoming of God’s people. It wasn’t a good look when Sarah laughed at the promise God had made regarding her conceiving a son, and was rebuked by the assertion, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” ( Gen 18:14) Compare her response with that of Mary the mother of Jesus who responded much more gracefully to the news that she would be a pregnant virgin, according to the will and good purpose of God. In Luke 1:38 she replies to God’s messenger, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

She appreciated that God would accomplish what He said He would do and her place was to agree with the word of God. That is also what we must do. We must agree with God; agree with His word. So we must approach the challenges we face in life with a sense of expectation at how God may want to show us his purpose in our circumstances. Every one of our lives contains circumstances that are opportunities to see God glorified. But in order to see it we need to remember and meditate on this truth: "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jer. 32:27)

God wants to do miracles in each of our lives but are we in a place to recognise what He wants to do? We should not be astonished at the power God has and His desire to move miraculously among us, and so may our attitude be less like Sarah’s and more like Mary’s as we open our hearts and our lives to welcome the move of God in our midst.
